My trip to Paradise

On the 6th of June my boyfriend Sean and I departed cold and rainy Dublin and went to Cancun in Mexico. Lots of you asked all about the holiday and I got many messages and emails about the hotel, flights, shopping and things to do in the area. I tried my best to respond to most messages but being on my holidays I tried to switch off as much as possible! Hopefully I can address all of your questions in this blog post, but if you have any more please leave a comment below.

The Flights

The travelling was most definitely the worst part of the trip. We had to fly Dublin to London Gatwick first and then onwards to Cancun. We flew with Aer Lingus and then with Virgin Atlantic. I loved the second plane as we had our own TV where we could watch films to pass the time (I watched 50 Shades of Grey, Focus, the new Cinderella movie and Gone Girl). The staff are so friendly, and the food and drink was very nice. I felt as relaxed as I could be for a 10 hour flight. After delays and stopovers we travelled for twenty hours in total, but my god it was worth it when we reached our hotel.

The Hotel

We arrived to our hotel Secrets the Vine upon champagne arrival. We got checked in and the bellman brought our luggage up to our room. He escorted us around the room which was so spacious and luxurious, and then showed us our balcony. When we saw these views we were just speechless.

We went to bed pretty early for our first few nights as the time zone was 6 hours behind, we were so exhausted after long days in the sun! Sean and myself finished college in May and it was obviously a really stressful year, so we were so excited to sit by the pool or on the beach, soak up the sunshine and have a few drinks every day. There are four different pools and each pool has a completely different vibe, one is really relaxed, one is with loud music and a party atmosphere and the other pool is where all of the activities take place. Three of the pools overlook the ocean and the views are breathtaking, we seriously had to pinch ourselves every morning.

Secrets the Vine is  an unlimited luxury resort which means it's all inclusive, we didn't have to pay for a thing during our stay. There was 7 different restaurants, some of which wouldn't be our taste. Our favourites were the Bluewater Grill (Best steak I've ever had!!), Barefoot Grill, Nebiollo which is an italian and of course the sports bar 'Half-Time'. In total I think there was about 11 bars in the hotel and we took full advantage!! They have the most amazing and unique cocktail menu, we must have tried every single one of them.

One thing that struck us is that a lot of proposals and weddings take place in the hotel, and a huge proportion of guests are on their honeymoon. It is very much a romantic hotel and is very orientated towards couples. There were very few large groups and it is an adult only resort. If you are currently planning your honeymoon I would strongly urge you to consider this hotel. I have never been in such a luxurious and relaxing resort, it is beyond 5 star.

Activities

We went on a 14 day holiday and we spent 13 days in the hotel as we didn't want to leave!! We had everything at the tip of our fingers and felt no need to leave, but we both wanted to visit one of the new 7 wonders of the world which is Chichen Itza and a beautiful Cenote called Ik Kil. We booked this trip with our travel rep Amstar which is located in the reception of the hotel. It cost us just under 150 euro.

Chichen Itza is one of the modern wonders of the world. It was built 1500 years ago by Mayan people and the ruins are still being discovered today. We were so lucky that the day we went it was cloudy, as there was lots of walking around the park and you wouldn't want to be doing so in 30 degree heat. The park itself was beautiful and the history behind it is so interesting!

After our visit to Chichen Itza we went to a Cenote which is basically a huge sinkhole, called Ik Kil. It is one of the scariest but best things I have ever done in my life. The cenote is so stunning, but is 150 ft deep and I'm not a good swimmer so I was terrified!! I had to bite the bullet and jump in as I knew I would probably never get the chance to do it again. The water was FREEZING!! It is fresh water and it really cleanses the body. The photos are lovely but they don't do this place justice. I couldn't believe that it was nature and not man made.

How we booked our holiday and the cost

We planned our holiday 10 months in advance and we booked through a travel agency called Tropical Sky. The trip costs us €2300 each for two weeks. That included our 4 flights, checked on baggage, transfers, the hotel and all food and drink. It sounds pretty steep but if you have the money and want to go on a holiday of a lifetime, GO HERE!!!

I know lots of you were researching the hotel and many of you asked how I could afford an €11,000 hotel, but we just availed of some serious early bird discounts. I dealt with Sinead and she was extremely helpful and made the booking process so easy. Without a doubt we will be returning to her this September when we plan holiday 2016!

Thank you so much for reading this travel blog, I hope you enjoyed it and found the information useful! Sean and I had the best time and enjoyed every second. If you have any other questions leave a comment below or message me on my facebook blog!

Lots of Love,
Ally
